Understanding God's Wisdom

2024_Hope_1Corinthians_SQUARE

I want you to consider the following statements, which should be undisputable:

  • Ants marching on the sidewalk cannot comprehend the complex world of human beings.
  • Dogs do not understand their owner’s weekend plans.
  • A piece of clay cannot fathom the potter’s reasons for shaping it in a certain way.

Let me add one more, perhaps slightly less obvious: Humans, when left to ourselves, do not (and cannot) understand the wisdom of God.

But oh, how we try! We think we know what God is like, and we develop expectations for how he should operate in the world. Entire systems of religion prescribe a path that one must follow to know God or earn his favor. Tragically, all this effort is futile if it is pursued apart from God’s revelation in Jesus Christ.

I encourage you to read this week’s preaching passage, 1 Corinthians 2:1-16, before Sunday, and come prepared to learn the key to understanding God’s wisdom.
